Moving Along
Posted 01/13/2017 by Taline Perez
Sergio has been crying a lot this past week. He hasn't been feeling well, fighting a bug I think. And his frustration level is way high. I think he also needs to socialize so we have to figure that out. If you would like to visit for about 30 minutes and are not sick, please call and come by.
He also wanted to walk on Sunday from the sofa to his bed and with a GATE belt, walker, and some help positioning his leg, and he did. He also practiced with PT on Tuesday. Such a confusing moment for me. Happy that he is progressing from the stroke and yet this cancer that lingers over everything.
The girls are doing well in school which is amazing to me, but I will accredit that to Sergio. So many things can cause kids to not do well in school. I know in high school (because I use to teach high school) it's usually a pretty large or complex problem with no easy solutions. He is the elementary teacher who still knows all the names of all his students in his first class he taught 27 years ago. He had several talks with the girls prior to surgery instructing, challenging and encouraging them to do well in school prior to his surgery, no matter what. And not a serious sit down talk. They were hugging, watching TV casual talks as if it was part of everyday normal life, which he has always done so well.
Nairi won first place in art for Reflections and Adriné first place for literature (writing) recently. Nairi is also reading now (again because of Sergio who has read to her almost daily since she was about 6 months old as he did for Adriné) in the big cushy chair in their room on his lap (often forcing me to end the 30-60 minute long "reading" but really talking time) and started teaching her all the rules last year. She has become his little speech therapist and he is actually slowly increasing his vocabulary.
He wanted to sleep in his own bed Monday, without rails. He did, but out came the TV monitor, moving of furniture and that feeling I use to have when the girls started walking as toddlers. On alert all the time with no down time for your brain.
Well, off to do more paperwork to get assistance for the $4300.00 chemo pills that he can't take and I can't return because he can't swallow them whole. He chews the pills. I still love him as I always have and like him even more than the first time I saw him waving enthusiastically at me while he was waiting to meet me for the first time in front of the Cheesecake factory in Pasadena as I drove by to park.

Mina's note: Please leave a comment, as Segio and Taline read these together for encouragement.
Taline, this is such a sweet and personal post. I love reading about Sergio's wonderful influence on the girls. They will always carry that with them, all their lives! I appreciate you telling us more about him as a person - how he held Adriné on his chest in the hospital for hours and days on end, how he remembers the names of all his students, how he explained things to the girls before his surgery and how they are still getting lots of "daddy time" and daddy love. I love reading about your love for him and how you first met. You guys are in my prayers as you travel this road together.
ReplyDeleteEverytime I read one of your journal entries to Fred he comments on what a good writer you are, Taline. I am so glad for the picture of Sergio enthusiastically waiting for you. You deserved his love.
ReplyDeleteHi Taline and Sergio,
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you remember me, since we haven't attended granada for about 4 years since we've moved, but I remember you both and your sweet girls as nairi was close in age to my daughter, Karis. Anyway, I've been following your story through Mina and have been blessed in hearing updates on how you all are and how you're persevered through this season God has you in. Know you are all in our daily prayers. Trusting that He is giving you much strength, rest, mercy and healing, and grace for each day. May the Lord continue to keep you in the palm of His hand.
Much love,
Kristin Chacon
Just read this Taline. Woohoo - good job Sergio with all the progress you are making. I don't have time to write long right now, but wanted you to know I found the blog, that we love all four of you dearly and we do not cease in our prayers. Praying for healing, for clear thinking filled with truth, for topsy turvy emotions, for the girls- so proud of how they're doing in school, for financial provision and His strength to take one day at a time! Batchikner to all! - Sam and Annette
ReplyDeleteSerge,
ReplyDeleteWhat's up stud mister! We think of yo all the time at school and still sit in the dark at work during lunch, forgetting to turn on the lights. It's actually traveled over to the bathroom! Peeing in the dark is better for girls than boys I guess. No aiming involved! I'm sure you're getting more frustrated, totally understandable. But you got this. You got your girls and you're lady who love you more than anything. I mean I guess you're pretty cool, but they think you are the coolest thing ever...I'd go with it! :) Keep trying new things and try to be willing to do what they ask. I can imagine the thoughts that prob. go through your head when they want you to do things you just don't have energy for. But know we love you, we believe in you and take it from my dad...miracles happen!!! Love ya,
Christi
So many typo's! Sorry. Didn't re-read and haven't had my coffee!!
DeleteHi Sergio and Taline,

I thank you so much for sharing your journey on the blogs -- you are all so inspirational and such a blessing, and sharing moments of what love and family are all about is so beautiful and real. Missing you all and would love to see you soon. XOXO
ReplyDeleteHello Mr. PEREZ and Family! So, I've heard many times that God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers♡After reading your blogs, and seeing your family pictures I come to understand. Your a family of Faith, Hope,Love and Unity! Mr. Perez was my 4th grade teacher about 26 years ago! Wow, do I feel old...I believe we were his 2nd class when he began teaching.Let me tell you...it was my first year at Laurel, 4th grade was one of the best and memorable years from my childhood. Growing up in a very traditional Mexican family, I would bring homecooked meals for lunch. My mom would pack me the best burritos ever! But, Mr. Perez in one of many student teacher lunches would offer me $2 for my burrito so, I would go buy cafeteria food.I remember a parent conference my mom telling him "Maestro, le voy a mandar comida con Vivian!" Meaning "Teacher, I'll pack you a lunch too!" He was so embarrassed but, he never said no to my moms lunches.Aww, so many great memories and laughs!Btw, my brother Tony Arias had him 4 years later and the lunches continued! This summer I ran into him and his beautiful girls at the library. We were both signing up our kids to the reading program. He met my kids, and said geez, how time flies. At least, you look like the mom! I look like their grandpa! Ha!Always with his sense of humor! Mrs.Perez I have not had the pleasure of meeting you! But, I would love to make a quick visit if possible.
ReplyDeletePlease, contact me at Vivianaltamirano30@gmail.com.
Please know that the Arias family has you in prayer! Stay strong, you are not alone♡
Sincerely, A grateful student:
